Larval response to frass and guaiacol: detection of an attractant produced by bacteria from Spodoptera littoralis frass

چکیده
Abstract Larval frass in herbivorous lepidopterans is mainly composed of plant-derived material and microbes from the gut. Despite fact that conspecific larvae repels female moths Spodoptera littoralis oviposition, role volatiles on larval foraging behavior largely unknown. Here, we show S. walk upwind to a wind tunnel assay. We identified volatile guaiacol (2-methoxyphenol) as key ligand for odorant receptor (OR) Slit Or59 which expressed heterologously. isolated guaiacol-producing bacteria Serratia marcescens were fed cotton, Enterobacter cloacae, E. ludwigii Klebsiella sp. derived cabbage-fed larvae. In addition guaiacol, also acetoin, 3-methyl-1-butanol dimethyl disulfide, large proportions headspace collections bacteria. A Y-tube olfactometer assay showed fourth instar are attracted guaiacol. Moreover, cotton leaves treated with insecticide Spinosad highly attractive Our results provide basis management pest by directly targeting larvae, based an attract-and-kill strategy. Further studies needed test application semiochemical-based species .

Shortly after Kangas et al. (1) reported that a-terpineol was the major component of a primary host attractant for Blastophagus piniperda L., Silverstein, Rodin, and Wood (2) revealed the identity of three other terpene alcohols that play a role in the orientation of bark beetles. However, Silverstein et al. concluded, from laboratory bioassay, that a mixture of the three terpene alcohols they ...

Anopiophora glabripennis (Motsch.) (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) is a destructive woodborer, attacking many species of deciduous hardwood trees. Apriona swainsoni (Hope) (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) is a woodborer of Sophora japonica L. (Angiospermae: Fabaceae). Dastarcus helophoroides (Fairmaire) (Coleoptera: Bothrideridae) is an important natural enemy of both Cerambycid species in China. Kairomon...
متن کاملInsect frass in Baltic amber
Inclusions of wood debris loosened from pine-like trees are abundant in Baltic amber of Eocene and Oligocene age. The possibilities to find insect frass and excrement among wood debris are outlined and some examples are given. Comparison with the frass and excrement produced by present-day insects provide a possibility to identify insects even though their fossils are lacking. This information ...

TLR2-mediated activation of neutrophils in response to German cockroach frass.
It is becoming increasingly clear that innate immune mediators play a role in regulating adaptive immune responses in asthma pathogenesis. Cockroach exposure is a major risk factor for the development of asthma. In this study we asked whether German cockroach (GC) feces (frass) could initiate an innate immune response. Naive BALB/c mice were challenged with a single intratracheal inhalation of ...
